JORGE CABALLERO CONCERT TRIP Saturday March 28, 2009 at 8:00 PM Marywood University, Marian Chapel A guest of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Guitar Society on March 28th, Mr. Caballero will perform a few selections by Villa-Lobos, a very rare Sonata by the extraordinary lutenist Sylvius L. Weiss, not known to have been previously performed on guitar, and Mr. Caballero’s own arrangement, the first ever made for guitar, of Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata Opus 1. Jorge Caballero, the youngest musician and only guitarist to win the prestigious Naumburg International Competition, is known for his dazzling virtuosity, intense musicality and spellbinding performances. He is widely regarded as one of the finest guitarists of his generation. Allan Kozinn of the New York Times called Mr. Caballero a “superb young guitarist” and praised his rare combination of “a deft, powerful technique and a soft-spoken interpretive persona.” In addition to the Naumburg Competition won in 1996 at the age of 19, Mr. Caballero is the recipient of top prizes at the Tokyo International Competition, Luis Sigall Competition, and First Latin American Guitar Competition. A native of Lima, Peru, Mr. Caballero began his professional training at the National Conservatory in Lima, studying with Oscar Zamora. When he applied to the Conservatory his teacher suggested he should list the pieces he could not play, since there were so few of them. He later came to the United States where he attended the Manhattan School of Music. His repertoire ranges from Renaissance pieces for the vihuela to modern compositions by composers such as Carter and Berio. He is a founding member of the string quartet, Axis, bringing to it the sensual sounds of his guitar to explore new options of sound. Tickets are available at the door: General admission $15; Members/Students $10. We will be leaving Love The Arts! at 6:45pm RSVP March 20
